Perinatal Mental Health

The perinatal period is the period of time since conception of a baby until one year postpartum. This is a very delicate time when we go through immense changes physically, emotionally, and hormonally. Sometimes these changes can cause shifts in our ability to take in the stressors that come with being pregnant, birthing, and becoming a parent.

These changes can sometimes cause an increase in anxiety. You may find yourself having thoughts you’ve never had before about dangers around you. You may find yourself having more fatigue than you’ve ever imagined, feeling sadness, and having a hard time getting through the day. Or you may find that it’s harder than you thought it would be to connect to your baby.

This time period is also hard on your relationships. It can feel overwhelming to think about having intimacy with someone after giving birth. Also, you may see yourself differently and have a hard time connecting with others that don’t seem to understand this major shift you are going through.
